IYEP invites you to explore Ghana, to learn about the people and the culture and, also contributing to its growth and development. Formerly known as Gold Coast and a colony of Britain, Ghana became an independent state in 1957. The country is a multi-party parliamentary democracy based on constitutional governance, which guarantees separation of powers between the Executive, Legislature and the Judiciary. The presidency has a four-year term and the incumbent can serve a maximum of two terms.
Located on the west coast of Africa, Ghana is surrounded by three Francophone countries. English is the official language but Akan, which is the language of the largest ethnic group, is the commercial language. Ghana is six hours from London and nine hours from New York by air. Ghana is reputed to be one of the friendliest countries in the world, whose coastal area consists of plains and numerous lagoons near the estuary of rivers with strikingly beautiful landscaping in the middle belt.
The country is poly-ethnic with forty-two linguistic variations. A population of twenty-two million is scattered across the country with the South, including Accra, having the largest concentration. Seventy percent of the population lives in traditional settings with agriculture as their main stay,

WORK AND TRAVEL
This program is offered to the United States and United Kingdom for continuing and full time students in the accredited Universities in Ghana. The program aims at providing opportunities for students learn at first hand the cultures of United States and Great Britain. Applicants are expected to be between the ages of 18 to 30 years to qualify.
Program package includes return air ticket, job placement, accommodation, social security number, travel insurance, orientation before and on arrival in the host country among others. Duration of the program is three months and optional month of travel within the host country. Applicants are required to go through interview and selection process before admitted on the program.

VACATION ABROAD EXCHANGE
This is a group program led by a matured group leader usually a teacher or a member of staff from the IYEP. The program aims at broadening the horizons of students at Secondary School levels to learn and understand foreign cultures by participating in the day to day activities of a host family who are carefully selected by partners based on family’s love to open doors to international students as act of international goodwill and understanding. Destinations on this program usually are USA, UK, CANADA, GERMANY, FRANCE, MOROCCO, SOUTH AFRICA and ITALY.
The process of applications involves consent of parents and guardians and their full participation in the application process. Flexible payment terms are offered to parents. In some cases needy students are obliges to apply for scholarship. A proof of student status would be required for processing application. Each group is led by a matured group leader who provide assistance when the need arise.

LANGUAGE ABROAD
The program is specially designed for university language students aspiring to gain proficiency in the chosen areas of study. Languages offered on this program are French, Spanish, Arabic, Swahili, Portuguese and Russia. Continuing students in other departments are warmly welcomed. Destinations are France, Canada, Switzerland, Morocco, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Guatemala, Kenya, Tanzania, Ecuador, Argentina, Chile etc. Program durations are 3months, 6months, 9months and 12 months.

INBOUND
Our inbound programs are structured to focus on areas of greatest need where not much assistance are available to complement the efforts of developing partners. These include OPHANAGES or CHILDREN’S HOME, RURAL EDUCATION, HEALTH, and SMALL SCALE ENTERPRISES.
The voluntary program adheres to the same standards and principles of the VOLUNTARY PARTNERS INTERNATIONAL (VIP)www.experiment.org
We aim at enriching the lives of volunteers as they spend part of their time in Ghana to offer assistance to needy areas of Ghanaian social life. The program is designed to provide cultural immersion in all forms contrasting rural lifestyle with life in urban Ghana. Flexibility is the key word so volunteers would be able to travel in the country to enjoy the beautiful scenery during weekends and public holidays. Participants staying a longer period are also offered vacation periods.
Before you apply to this program you may want to check www.experiment.org to find out if there is a VIP office in your country. The office will help you to obtain detail information and may be able to have someone who has been on this program before to talk to you.However, in situations where there is no VIP office in your country IYEP will endeavor to make the process as easy as possible.
PROGRAM DETAILS
The program begins with airport transfer to either host family or hostel (for those traveling outside of Accra). A two-day orientation is offered to discuss the political history of Ghana, the social structure of the country, local language training, the uses of transportation system in Ghana, a tour of Accra city and eventual transfer to the host project. The Program Manager or a supervisor will regularly visit your project and host family to see how you getting on and solve problems of cultural shocks among others.
